Training Task

INSTRUCTIONS

In this task you will be presented with a series of photographs of Black and White men with traits under each image. Your task is to respond negatively to stereotypes and positively to nonstereotypes. In particular, please respond “NO” when a word is commonly associated in our culture with the race of the person depicted in the photograph. Please respond “YES” when a word is NOT commonly associated in our culture with the race of the person depicted in the photograph. We are not asking you to respond according to your own personal beliefs but according to common cultural associations with Blacks and Whites.

RESPOND “NO” TO STEREOTYPES
For example, if you see the word “violent” with the photograph of a Black person you should respond “NO” by pressing the “I” key because that trait is often associated with Blacks in our culture.
Likewise, if you see the word “conservative” with a photograph of a White person you should respond “NO” by pressing the “I” key because that trait is often associated with Whites in our culture.

RESPOND “YES” TO NONSTEREOTYPES
For example, if you see the word “intelligent” with the photograph of a Black person you should respond “YES” by pressing the “E” key because that trait is NOT commonly associated with Blacks in our culture.
Likewise, if you see the word “carefree” with the photograph of a White person you should respond “YES” by pressing the “E” key because that trait is NOT commonly associated with Whites in our culture.

PLEASE REMEMBER

For “NO” - Press the “I” key

All incorrect responses will be followed by a red X.
